I have a Tibet cover for which I am seeking the following information (if possible):

1. What stamp is used on it?

2. What is its destination?

3. What might be the possible date of mailing?

The last question may be the most difficult, since the CDS is smudged and unclear.

Dear Eric.

I can only answer in regard to the nomination of the stamp which is 1/& Trangka (Scott No. 1) and based on the condition n of the scan I estimate the date of the cover to be about 1925-1930. Earlier covers are usually cancelled with a clearer postmark.

Destination, sorry, my language skills in Tibetan or Nepali script/language are zero, but maybe another collector can help here.

I can just say certainly: destination is LHASA (otherwise, sorry, I can't read anymore the thibetan handwriting).
Otherwise, I can add that the "trader's handmark" is well known, but generally on the 1933 issue.
Best regards.

Thank you both for your reply:

I had a chance to correspond with Geoffrey Flack, who at the moment is in Bangkok (and later headed for Indipex 2011). Here is what he told me --

Eric

The stamp being used is a First Issue 1/6tr Green  .. this was the rate for an internal letter up to 1930 .. but I have never seen covers from this correspondence from this period - the examples I have seen date from the early 1950s.  These Negative cancels were rarely used after 1933.

At first appearance the stamp and cancel appear to be genuine - but I cannot make out the cancel even when I enlarged it.  I am also not 100% sure it is correctly tied.  (The cancel might from several towns - GYANTSE - is the most likely, the others are quite rare (even Lhasa is very difficult to find commercially used  in Black).

I would need help in translating to determine the covers destination.
