I was reading a recent obit for a man named Burt Todd, who, among other things, "visited the Kingdom of Bhutan, where, as a guest of the present Queen Mother, Ashi Kesang of the Dorji family, he designed and distributed a series of unique postage stamps that were sold around the world."  This seems plausible except that it happened "shortly after" 1949, whereas the first Bhutan issue in Scott's is 1962.  Anyone out there have more info. on this?  It's quite intriguing...

Burt Todd was indeed the instigator of the postage stamps of Bhutan, but although he had first visited the country long before it was not until 1962 that he arranged for the first stamps to be produced. There are several accounts of his life and his dealings with the Bhutanese royal family and government that can be accessed on the internet. See, e.g.,
