I have a Nepalese cover dated 1911/2/23 ie. early June 1854 by the Western system.  According to the notes that came with the cover it was posted by Amar Singh Thapa and Jagya Nidhi Upadhya to the Commander in Chief Jagat Sumsher Jung Kunwar Rana at Kantipur (Kathmandu) by stick post.  I am familiar with the stick post (Lauri Hulak) that was established by Jung Bahadur.  As I understand it, such mail was attached to a stick that was carried by any travelers going in the direction of its destination.  If such travelers reached a cross-roads and needed to proceed in a different direction than required by the mail, they planted the stick at the crossroads to be picked up later by travelers going in the right direction.   I am wondering if there is any marking that I should look for on the envelope or if there is any other way to determine if this letter was actually sent by stick post rather than the regular Hulak relay system.

As far as I know the stick post did not use any special markings. In the middle of the envelope you can find traces of the stick in which it was clamped. So theses envelopes are easy to forge.

Hans Wittmann writes about the stick post (Lauri Hulak). He believes that this kind of transport existed only a very short time, as all letters he knows with their characteristic attributes of the stick post were written in 1846. This was the very beginning Jung Bahadurs régime.

I would be a little surprised if the cover you have went by stick mail. I would have thought that covers going to the Commander-in-Chief would have been of some importance would have been carried by runner, rather than use a hit and miss system such as stick mail.
