1896, Nepal-India Combination cover from Salyan/Nepal to Calcutta franked by imperforate 1886-89 1 a. blue on medium native paper (H/V 11) tied by fine strike in black of Salyan (Hellrigl C20), reverse with India 1882 1/2 a blue green (SG 84) for onward transmission tied in transit at Banke (Nepal) and again on arrival in Calcutta (March 17). Handstamps of Salyan negative on reverse alongside Banke (Hellrigl N3) and Jamnaha (March 11) transits.

This is an early example of an unofficial postal exchange between Nepal and India. The Nepalese stamp paid the postage to the Indian Border (at Banke) while the Indian stamps paid the postage from there to Calcutta.

The transit time of only 6 days is a prime example of the capabilities of the early postal systems. The date format BS (Bikram Sambat) is that of the Nepalese calendar which is approximately 56 years, 8 month and 17 days ahead of the Gregorian calendar.

Rückseitig Indien Marke der Ausgabe 1882-88, ½ Anna, blau-grün mit unleserlichem Stempel, vermutlich Nepalesischer Killerstempel von Banke; dazu ein schwacher Stempelabschlag der indischen Post von Jamnaha und 2 Abschläge des Calcutta Abgangstempel datiert 17.03.1896.

Dies ist ein sehr frühes Beispiel von inoffiziellem Postverkehr zwischen Nepal und Indien. Die Nepalesische Marke war für die Beförderung bis zur Nepalesisch-Indischen Grenze bei Banke notwendig, die Indische Marke für die Beförderung von da ab nach Calcutta.

Die Postlaufzeit von nur 6 Tagen ist ein Musterbeispiel der Leistungsfähigkeit der frühen Post. Die Datumsangabe BS (Bikram Sambat) ist die Nepalesische Zeitrechnung bzw. Kalender und ist ca. 56 Jahre, 8 Monate und 17 Tage  unserer (AD) Zeitrechnung voraus.
