Based on a draft received from the Tibetan government, the famous British printing house Waterlow & Sons prepared a few essays and sent them to the Tibetan government for approval. All these essays had been in the nomination of 1 Karmanga, printed in various colours. However, most likely due to financial reasons, Waterlow & Sons did not receive the order to print the stamps of Tibet; however, they had been printed in Tibet in the traditional printing way. These so-called Waterlow Essays as they are no called are very rare and only a few are known.
Waterfall mentions in his Tibet handbook that some of the Waterlow proofs show part of the Watermark “Jas. Wrigley and Son Ltd“. I have scanned front and reverse of the proof but the watermark does not show nicely. With some imagination you can see it on the reverse in the middle of the lower part. .
 

Die berühmte englische Druckerei Waterlow & Sons hatte, basierend auf einem Entwurf aus Tibet eine Anzahl von Essays, alle in der Wertstufe 1 Karmanga in unterschiedlichen Farben angefertigt, die nun als Waterlow Essays bekannt sind. Diese Essays wurden der tibetischen Regierung vorgelegt. Der Druckauftrag wurde, vermutlich aus finanziellen Gründen, dann doch nicht der Firma Waterlow & Sons erteilt, stattdessen wurden die Marken in der traditionellen Druckweise von tibetischen Druckern hergestellt. Diese Essays sind extrem selten und nur in wenigen Stücken bekannt.
Waterfall schreibt in seinem Buch dass einige wenige der bekannten Essays Teile des Wasserzeichens “Jas. Wrigley and Son Ltd“ tragen. Hier solch ein seltenes Essay in der Farbe grün, mit Wasserzeichen. Ich habe Vorder- und Rückseite abgebildet aber das Wasserzeichen ist auf dem Bild nur sehr schlecht zu erkennen. Mit etwas Phantasie ist es auf der Rückseite etwa im unteren Viertel zu erkennen.
