THE POST RUNNER SPEAR FROM NEPAL

wpe1.jpg (4318 bytes)

In 1981 I made my one and only trip so far to Nepal, during which time I was fortunate enough to meet Mr J.B.Manandhar. He was kind enough to take me on a half-day tour of Kathmandu and District in his car. During my conversations with him I had mentioned that I was trying to see if I could locate a post runner’s spear among the many antique looking shops in Kathmandu. He said nothing at the time, but on the morning of my departure he had delivered to my hotel a post runner’s spear that he had taken from the Post Office stores and sent it to me as a gift. I had never imagined that such items were still in use and it was fortunate that it just fitted corner to corner in my suitcase. As you can see from the photograph it is approximately four feet long and at the bottom of the head of the spear is a cluster of three bells. It is also interesting to note that the stick is painted in British Post Office Red. This item is of course one of the more treasured possessions I have from Nepal.
