Letter sent 6 December 1923
Reference: 201602/23
From:
General Post Office London
To:
The
Director General of
Posts, Brussels,
Belgium
With reference to your letter of the
29th of last month, concerning the despatch of mails by the Desert Motor
transport service between Haifa and Baghdad, I am directed by the
Postmaster General to send herewith, for your information, a copy of
statement which has been received from the Iraq Post Offices showing the
conditions under which use may be made by other Postal Administrations
of the new services. A copy of the Time Table of the Services is also
enclosed.
The overland mail service will be run so that connection will be
made with the Peninsular and Oriental Steam
Navigation Company's Service
between Marseilles and Port Said.
As will be seen from the statement, arrangements for the
institution of mails by the new route should be made with the
intermediate concerned and the Iraq Post Office.
So far as this Office is concerned the
despatches may be commenced at any time. I am to add that correspondence received
from your Office superscribed for transmission by the direct route, with
the special fee fully prepaid in British postage stamps will as a
provisional measure be included in the Mail made up in this country but
it is more satisfactory as a permanent arrangement that direct mails
should be made up for Iraq by the Belgian Post Offices
