Welcome to Rainer's

The Route Instruction Handstamps, cont. HS-N01 - N25

On his page all new discovered handstamps will be listed, waiting for publication in an eventually new publication.

Notes:

Due to the large number of new discovered handstamp these pages have been split. The Continuation you may find either on the menu on the left or here ...

  • If a link in the column "Cover Image" is provided, a fully size high resolution image of the cover bearing the respective Handstamp. That image will open in a new layer.

  • If you copy the image that has been scanned from the original cover and open and enlarge it with a graphic program you will see measuring lines around the handstamp imprint. These lines indicate the measuring border from which the actual measurement has been taken.

HS-N01a

72,10 x 13,10 mm

This handstamp and the one below one I have on a cover sent February 1925 from Iraq, Basrah (Busrah) to England. Although the size of the two handstamps is identical (as I can make out based on the poor strikes and my measurement), the appearance of the handstamp and its colour is somehow different. So far, these are the only ones known.

This handstamp I only have seen on a "sample" post from the "Iraq Automobile Association" Baghdad to USA.

HS-N02b

Front

NL

53,30 x 6,10 mm

This handstamp is again on a "sample" post from the "Iraq Automobile Association" Baghdad to USA. The measurements are very slightly different from the one above but this might be due to the nature of the handstamp.

HS-N03

Front

NL

52,50 x 12,90 mm

Similar to HS-28. HS-28 is listed with a more or less identical size but the line below "BAGHDAD - HAIFA in my copy is much shorter.

Same handstamp as above but on a cover from Iraq (22 July 1924) to Italy (arrival postmark reverse (16 August 1924). Also that cover bear a handstamp similar to HS-N16.

I believe that cover was not sent by the Overland Mail as during that time the rate would be been 9 Anna for a registered cover sent with the Overland Mail. Also the transit time of almost 4 weeks supports this. But, where the Overland Mail / Motor Mail Markings have been applied?

HS-N15 (3)

Cover from Baghdad (8 March 1928) to Livorno, Italy (19 March 1928). ON reverse transit postmarks of Qantara, Egypt (11 March 1928) and Alexandria, Egypt 12 March 1929.

On a cover from Port Said, Egypt (20 October 1926) via Baghdad (23 October 1926) to Abadan, Persia.

That cover also carries a Route Instruction Handstamp HS-22 (2).

Difference in size may be explained by the thick strike of the handstamp.

On a 1926 cover from Paris / France to Baghdad.

HS-N18

On registered cover from Arthur Bayetti, Imperial Ottoman Bank Baghdad-Berlin/Germany, dated 12. September 1923

Since this Handstamp is on a trial cover prior of the official start of the Overland Mail, it could well be that this handstamp has been used by Iraq Post. Still an idea which i will further investigate.

On cover again from Banque Nationale de Perse, Succursale de Kermanchah, Iran, dated 11 April 1931. Interestingly cover was routed as per transit postmark on reverse, via Istanbul, Turkey. Cover not in my collection, hence the poor quality of images and non-verified size of handstamp.
