Overland Mail Baghdad Haifa Pages

The Overland Mail Baghdad-Haifa is a relatively little known part of the middle east postal history, formed after the 1st world war by two young New Zealanders (Captain Norman Nairn and Driver-Mechanic Mr. Gerald Nairn) who had served with the Royal Army Corps.

These Pages try to explain primarily the postal history aspect of this company, however, for a good measure also historical facts and background information's like company pamphlets are shown.

This picture gives you an idea how adventurous the travel thru the desert has been.

  • May 17, 2014, The eastwards rates from The Netherlands for mail thru the Overland Mail Baghdad-Haifa are newly added. Still much information missing but it is the beginning.

  • May 16, 2014, A letterhead used for correspondence of the Nairn Transport company.

  • May 3, 1925, The eastwards rates from France for mail thru the Overland Mail Baghdad-Haifa are completely revised.

  • April 29, 2014, London Gazette, 25 April 1924, Postal Notice, informing about the warrant that Parcels may be sent by Overland Mail since 1st April 1924 uploaded

  • April 28, 2014, the Postage Rates from Iran for the timeframe when the Overland Mail has been in operation have been added. Please note that this is an ongoing project as the rates are not based on (non-existent) Official Notifications but on covers seen so dates and rates may change.

  • April 18, 2014, new discovered Subtype of Imprinted Envelope Type 46 added. That subtype has a different envelope size and I have numbered it IE-46a.

  • April 17, 2014, new discovered Route Instruction Handstamp HS-N33 added, in addition, Route Instruction Handstamp HS-14 added.

  • March 21, 2014, Postal Instruction from Italy for mail to Iraq has been updated. Some help in translation from Italian to English is appreciated.

  • March 15, 2014. Due to the large number of Route Instruction Handstamps the respective pages have been divided into 5 parts for easier handling and faster loading.
