  • October 16, 2016. A 1931 cover from Egypt with a "Special Service" handstamp was added. Any information on that handstamp is welcomed. Furthermore, a 1931 cover with an apparently complete route instruction label L16/L17 has been added.

  • October 9, 2016, Foreign Letter Rate for mail from Iraq modified to reflect the latest research.

  • October 3, 2016. A variety of Imprinted Envelope IE45 has been added. I have listed that envelope as IE45-3 which has a size of 156x126 mm. Furthermore, a similar size variety of Imprinted Envelope IE46-4 has been added, that envelope has a size of 135x107 mm

  • August 20, 2016. An new Imprinted Envelope has been discovered, listed now as IE-N07.

  • August 11, 2016. A wax seal used by Nairn Eastern Transport Company has been found used on a Nairn Advertising Envelope. More details will be added in due time

  • June 21, 2016. New discovered Imprinted Envelope, listed as IE-N06, added.

  • June 7, 2016. Nairn Publicity Envelope (NPE) Type (Fuchs) 7d added. This item was purchased during NY2016 show and showed for the first time in color. The only such Nairn Advertising Envelope known in that size (Image follows shortly).
    Cover with perforated label L-10 issued by British Post added.

  • May 16, 2016, It was noticed in 2003, but reported here for the first time that Route Instructing Label L-10 from British Post that label exist also rouletted instead of perforated.

  • March 18, 2016, New discovered handstamp used from Baghdad, Iraq, added as as handstamp HS-N48

  • February 2, 2016, Scan of Nairn Advertisement Pamphlet "Baghdad by the Nairn Transport Company / The Overland Desert Mail" uploaded in large and small size version for free non-commercial use download.

  • January 3, 2016, Postal Rates for Palestine completely revised

  • December 29, 2015. A forerunner of the Overland Mail within Palestine has been added.

  • November 30, 2015. A January 1924 cover from Amman/Jordan to Baghdad added.

  • October 14, 2015. After discovering 8 different postage rate periods for the time during which the Overland Mail had been in place (7 of them implied a surcharge), i started to revise the Postage rate and Surcharges Pages for Iran.

  • October 13, 2015. I run across an image from an old collection page with the shown cover that carries an unusual "By Overland Route Or Air Mail" Route Instruction Handstamp which i now listed as HS-N47. Unfortunately the image i have is of low resolution but i can recognize the year 1927 as year of use. Any information on the whereabouts of that cover is highly appreciated.

  • October 11, 2015, An Imprinted Envelope used from Iran of the group IE-28-35 (2) has been added which does not completely match any of the listed types. The first copy of Imprinted Envelope IE-38 added. That is the only Imprinted Envelopes with an apparent variety on as it has two (2) hyphens) between BAGHDAD and HAIFA and was used from Nasseri, Iran. A sixth copy of Imprinted Envelope IE-34 (6) added.
    Some of the Imprinted envelopes are hard to separate, most likely caused by the unclear images and poor explanations in Collins Handbook. Certain Imprinted Envelopes i therefore list grouped. Here is IE-28-35 (2) and at last, another copy of an imprinted envelope as IE-34 but slightly different has been listed as IE-34-similar-2.
    Route Instruction Handstamp HS-22 added, the second copy known and the earlier of the two. It would be interesting to see an image of the other cover with that handstamp to verify the sender. a

  • October 10, 2015, Second copy of Route Instruction Handstamps HS-38 (2), a fourth copy of HS-40 (4), a second copy of HS-43 (2), a first copy of HS-60, the tenth (HS-79 (10) and eleventh copy (HS-79 (11), a second copy of HS-86 (2), a third copy of HS-87 (3) and finally, after having received some time ago a scan of a similar card, i could add a Picture Postcard with new Discovered Handstamp HS-N38 (1) to my collection.
    Third copy of Imprinted Envelope IE-04 (3) and and third  IE-05 (3) and forth copy of IE-05 (4), second imprinted Envelope IE-08 (02) used from Iran added.

  • October 9, 2015. Cover from Iran to France / Paris with a Route Instruction Label L-15 as well as 2 strikes of Route Instruction Handstamp HS-88. Furthermore, the second known copy of Route Instruction Handstamp HS-35 (2) has been added

  • September 23, 2015. Two additional copies of Rerouting Handstamps (RH 1-3 and RH 1-4) have been added, One of these handstamps is struck on a letter originating from USA.

  • June 17, 2015. Postal Notice from Germany added, announcing the cancellation of the Overland Mail Surcharge from Mid April 1929.

  • May 29, 1922, A collector friend informed me about a source for the old Postal Notices from Italy and found two additional references to the Overland Mail for mail from Italy in the bulletins from 1924, transcripts and translations will follow shortly.

  • May 22, 2015, Passenger receipt from 1928 of another Transport Company, Kawalty, Tawil & Co. Ligne Transdesertique, added

  • May 20, 2015. Extract from “Nachrichtenblatt des Reichpostministeriums”, the German Post Office Journal for 16 June 1925, revising the surcharges for the use of the Overland Mail, added

  • April 23, 2014. New earliest recorded usage date of Route Instruction Handstamp HS14 (2) added.

  • April 19, 2015. New discovered Route Instruction Handstamp used in Bahrain and listed now as HS-N46 added.

  • April 18, 2015. Postal announcement from Belgium for mail from Belgium using the Overland Mail added.

  • April 16, 2015. UPU Circulars (in French Language) have been added. I am working on a English translation. For the time being, PDF versions, overworked with OCR have been provided. Following UPU Circulars are uploaded: No. 6381-312 dated 20 September 1923, No. 6541-320 dated 25 September 1923 and No. 9553-365 dated 18 November 1937.
    Another copy (No. 3) of imprinted envelope IE 46 (3) added. And finally, a second copy of Route Instruction Handstamp HS-76 added.

  • April 15, 2015. Again in the personal archive of Norman Collins, author of the famous Overland Mail monograph which i have found a color photo of a Overland Mail cover with an unrecorded Handstamp which i now have listed as HS-N45.

  • April 14, 2015. Again from the photo archive of Norman Collins i can add a Overland Mail Notice from the Post Office of India - Kurnool. Photo at that time had been provided to Norman Collins by Tony Zoonefeld  Any Information on that notice is apricated.

  • April 13, 2015. Additional copy of Handstamp HS-45 out of the photo archive from Norman Collins added. Photo at that time had been provided to Norman Collins by Tony Zoonefeld

  • January 27, 2015. Previously unrecorded Imprinted Envelope IE-N5 has been added, furthermore, a believed unrecorded handstamp HS-N44 added.

  • January 25, 2015. Due to the large number of Imprinted envelopes, the listing has been split into 2 parts, Part 1 covers the Imprinted Envelopes IE-01 - IE-25, Part 2 the new Imprinted envelopes from IE-26 onwards including the new discovered ones.

  • January 21, 2015. Letter from British Consul in Damascus addressed to His Majesty's Principal, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Foreign Office, London, dated November 3rd, 1923, informing of the planed opening for Mail transport from Syria to Baghdad by Ms Kattaneh, added, furthermore, Route Instruction Handstamp HS-N03 in red color added.

  • January 20, 2015. A interesting letter from the British Liaison Officer in Beyrout to the French Army in the Levant, dated 30 September 1923 added. Furthermore, letter from the British Consul in Damascus addressed to His Majesty's Principal, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Foreign Office, London, dated October 4th. 1923, informing of the arrival of the first Overland Mail letters in Damascus, added. In addition, a letter from the British Consulate in Damascus to Nairn Transport Company in Beyrouth added.

  • January 19, 2015. I recently received a copy of the American Foreign Service Report No. 59, issued 24. January 1925 from the American Consulate in Teheran. I have uploaded that 3-page report for download (PDF Format, 2.50 MB). The transcript of the report is here.

  • January 18, 2015. In the personal archive of Norman Collins, author of the famous Overland Mail monograph which i have found two photocopies of covers which appear to have some unrecorded Route Instruction Handstamps, now listed here as HS-N42 and HS-N43, each on a cover addressed to USA. B/W image of cover with Route Instruction Handstamp HS-31 added.

  • January 1, 2014. Information about Ernest Stanley Fraser, apparently Director of Nairn Transport Company added. Furthermore, i received the information the the FELCA Watch "Desert Router" was also produced in Gold. More to come...

  • December 23, 2014, New discovered Route Instruction handstamp HS-N41 added. Also Press Photo of Norman Nairn on publicity tour in April 1923 in New York

  • December 21, 2014, Overland Mail Surcharges for mail from Canada to Iraq added. Furthermore, a 1925 DELCO advertisement added. DELCO seems t have been the provider of the Air Conditioning Systems in the BUICK and Chevrolet cars used by Nairn Transport Company.

  • December 14, 2014, Cover with Route Instruction Handstamp HS-92 from the Zvi Alexander Collection, as well as cover with Receiving Handstamp RH-1 from the Zvi Alexander collection added. The mystery around the place where this Receiving Handstamp has been used is now solved.

  • December 13, 2014. Started a Route Map which explains ones complete, all rotes used by the Overland Mail, including the transit routes for mail leaving/arriving at the Overland Mail Routes for/from International Destinations.
    Added another Transport Company that carried Mail. Haim Nathaniel and others are listed, more to follow...

  • December 12, 2014, Additional images of Buses used by Nairn have been added, including a nice image of a bus taken over from Nairn by the RAF in 1943 as well another photo, showing Norman Nairn ca. 1920 in Syria, added
    Furthermore, while going thru my archive i noted the image of a 1934 Nairn Pamphlet with a Lebanese revenue added and a previously unrecorded Nairn handstamp. I added that handstamp as Publicity Handstamp PH-NL2
    A General Motors Advertising booklet has been added including a scanned copy of the complete booklet as dowload.

  • December 11, 2014, Advertising Poster from Nairn Transport Company, advertising the Overland Desert Mail, added

  • December 3, 2014, most likely another copy of Handstamp HS-N01 discovered. The cover is dated 4 April 1924 and would be the earliest of this type. The cover is not yet in my hands, more details will follows in due course. Furthermore, Imprinted Envelope similar to IE-28 and additional Imprinted Envelope HS-34 added.

  • December 1, 2014, New discovered Handstamp HS-N40 and details on new discovered Handstamp HS-N39 added.

  • November 29, 2014. Overland Mail Surcharges from Iraq, based on law 46 of 1 May 1927 (Law for the Amendment of the Law for Surcharge on Air and Overland Mails No. 22 of 1925) "No. 46 of 1927".

  • October 30, 2014, This website has been awarded a Gold Medal in the Literature section at ROSSICA 2014, International Philatelic Biennial Stamp exhibition, held from 27 - 29 October 2014 in Moscow.

  • July 29, 2014. A Overland Mail Cover from Bahrain to USA which is bogus/doubtful in my opinion has been added. Transcript of letter from UK Air Ministry to Secretary of State Colonial Office added. Furthermore, letter dated 16th May 1923 from Iraq Post to UK General Post Office, the reply to that letter sent by UK General Post Office to Iraq Post, dated 25 June 1923 and a June 28, 1923 letter from UK General Post Office to Secretary of State, UK Foreign Office have been added.

  • July 28, 2014. From the collection of Bjorn Sohrne who has grated permission to use the images he had provided, i am happy to be able to show some more items of which i so far have only B/W photocopies. Handstamp HS-45, Handstamp HS-88, and an Office Handstamp, found on reverse of a Nairn Publicity Envelope, the only one seen so far...

  • July 25, 2014, Thanks to the cooperation of a Bjorn Sohrne I am able to show two Parcel Cards from Iran for Parcels transported by the Overland Mail.

  • July 6, 2014, Additional Overland Mail Covers from Iran added to the Postage Rate Table. I am getting more and more confused with the Iranian rates. Furthermore, a 18 Annas rate, registered Overland Mail cover, to UK added. Who can explain that rate?

  • July 4, 2014. Added an article published in Popular Mechanics, March 1934 issue featuring the Streamlined Buses used by Nairn transport Company.

  • July 02. 2014, A cover from an unrecorded/unreported Survey Trip help on 12. September 1923, prior of the official start of the Overland Mail, along with a newspaper clipping from Baghdad Times, dated 10 September 1923 has been added.

  • June 27, 2014. Transcript of Contract between Nairn Transport Co. and Iraq Post for the transport of Mail between Baghdad and Haifa and well as transcript of Internal Memo from June 1923 of British Post, discussion the Overland Mail Service and its conditions, benefits etc.

  • June 26, 2014. Postage Rate Table for Iran again modified and an additional Table added where covers with Postage Rates which do not match the current rate table. Any information is appreciated. Started to add official correspondence from the planning phase of the Overland Mail from the British Consulate at Damascus to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, London. Some very interesting details can be found there, not previously published.

  • June 22, 2014. Postage Rate Table for Iran modified. Column with total postage rate including Overland Mail Surcharge added. Also started to add links to Overland Mail covers from Iran in my collection.

  • June 21, 2014. Transcripts of letters between US Post and British Post added. Imprinted Envelope IE26, used from Palestine added. That Imprinted Envelope was previously only known used from Iraq, this is the first one used form Palestine, In adding, the Envelope has an Envelope size of 134 x 106 mm, totally different size compared to other similar envelopes.

  • June 15, 2014. A second copy of Imprinted envelope IE 46 (2) with different color shade of imprint and envelope has been added.

  • June 14, 2014. A collector friend has a Turkey Cover via Baghdad to Teheran in his collection. The first Overland Mail Cover originating from Turkey that positively has been transported by the Overland Mail. However, no rate information has been found so far.
    The same collector friend has an Imprinted Envelope (IE-NL4) in his collection that was unknown so far. I listed that envelope as IE-NL4 and also a cover with an unlisted handstamp I listed as HS-N35

  • June 13, 2014. The Layout changes are completed (hopefully).

  • June 12, 2014. The layout change takes more time and effort as planned, therefore please have patience in case of weird layout appearances etc. I work as fast as time permits.

  • May 23, 2014, a new discovered Route Instruction Handstamp HS-N34, on cover from Basrah to London UK added.

  • May 22, 2014, Transcript in French language of UPU circular 4854/157, dated 15 June 1925 added. English translation is in progress.

  • May 21, 2014, The Surcharges from Poland, in addition, the first reference mentioning Greece in relation with the Overland Mail have been added.

  • May 20, 2014, Due to the vast amount of material I have found in British Postal Museum (Postal Heritage) i have decided to dramatically extend and extended the Menu of the Postal History Section.

  • May 19, 2014, A rare 1934 cover from Saudi Arabia to Bahrain has been added, in addition Egyptian "By Special Service", a Forerunner of the Overland Mail Baghdad-Haifa and Iraq Postal Notice advertising Overland Mail labels added.

  • May 17, 2014, The eastwards rates from The Netherlands for mail thru the Overland Mail Baghdad-Haifa are newly added. Still much information missing but it is the beginning.

  • April 28, 2014, the Postage Rates from Iran for the timeframe when the Overland Mail has been in operation have been added. Please note that this is an ongoing project as the rates are not based on (non-existent) Official Notifications but on covers seen so dates and rates may change.

  • April 18, 2014, new discovered Subtype of Imprinted Envelope Type 46a added. That subtype has a different envelope size and I have numbered it IE-46a.

  • April 17, 2014, new discovered Route Instruction Handstamp HS-N33 added, in addition, Route Instruction Handstamp HS-14 added.

  • March 21, 2014, Postal Instruction from Italy for mail to Iraq has been updated. Some help in translation from Italian to English is appreciated.

  • January 25, 2014. A 1924 June 3 letter from GPO London, UK Post Office, confirming the Overland Mal Surcharge of 15 M. for Mail from Egypt to Iraq

  • January 18, 2014. The Collection of the late Zvi Alexander (it has been donated to the Israel Postal Museum) contains several covers with Handstamps and an Imprinted Envelope that are not listed in the known literature. I have examined the collection based on images i have in my archive and compared them with the new ones already listed here on that site. Due to that, i could add one Imprinted Envelope (IE-NL-3),  and five Handstamps (HS-N27 - NS-N31) and two Re-Routing and Receiving Handstamp (RRH-N01 & RRH-N02). However, the sizes i have not added as i can not verify/measure the size based on images without any reference measurement. Until i can inspect the collection my self in person I have added only items which are without doubt different from what is listed already. The images ex Zvi Alexander collection have been marked prominently in the listings.

  • January 12, 2014, after having discovered a correspondence of 9 covers from H.G. Tufenkdjian, Teheran, Iran, additional images of Route Instruction Handstamps HS-79 (3) - HS-79 (9) have been added. It seems that company had used at leased 2 handstamps which are slightly different in size and shape. Further research to study if a time line, if the handstamps had been used one after the other or in parallel to each other, is needed..

  • December 11, 2013, scanned image of Route Instruction Handstamp HS-83 and corresponding cover images have been added.

  • November 24, 2013, the only three covers known with the new discovered bilingual advertising marking from Lebanon (Publicity Handstamp Type PH-NL-1) with the wording "UTILISEZ le Service rapide Beyrouth Bagdad have been added.
